Hydrogen Networks in Bavaria – for Europe

Approval for Germany's hydrogen core network by the Federal Network Agency in October 2024 was a key step in developing a pipeline-based hydrogen infrastructure. The hydrogen core network, being the largest hydrogen transport network in Europe, will facilitate the ramp-up of the hydrogen economy and is therefore an important pillar in the climate-neutral energy system of the future.

The core network plans cover a number of key demand regions in our network area, including industrial centres such as Burghausen and Ingolstadt. Follow-up concepts are additionally required to create planning security for further Bavarian regions.

The Core Network Plus (Kernnetzplus) concept shows the hydrogen network plans drawn up by the transmission and distribution network operators, taking into consideration the existing gas infrastructure and the H2 demand in the region.

The Hydrogen Infrastructure: For the Market and with the Market

How the hydrogen infrastructure in Bavaria is developed and how connection concepts are prioritised for regions and urban areas both largely depend on local demand trends and the feasibility of repurposing existing infrastructure. Regions with high hydrogen demand and a gas infrastructure suitable for transporting hydrogen will be given priority, thus ensuring a network development that is both efficient and future-proof.

Current Project Initiative: HyPipe one

Our first pipeline section for transporting hydrogen, HyPipe one, is currently being contructed in the Bavarian chemical triangle between Gendorf/Burgkirchen and Burghausen/Haiming. The approximately 15-kilometre  pipeline will be hydrogen-ready in 2026 and connect potential hydrogen sources in Gendorf with sinks in Burghausen.

HyPipe one is part of our PCI project HyPipe Bavaria – The Hydrogen Hub. The PCI project supports our SoutH2 Corridor initiative, launched together with European network operators from Austria and Italy.

Our aim: to transport green hydrogen from North Africa through a southern corridor to industrial clusters in Bavaria and then on to Germany's core network.

H2 Projects – Future Perspectives

Our hydrogen projects create opportunities for hydrogen producers, traders and customers, as well as for Bavarian regions and international partners. By connecting sources and sinks, creating scalable hydrogen clusters and providing an import point at the German-Austrian border, we contribute to diversifying hydrogen supply sources.
